The Foundation Stage at
Kirk Ella St Andrew’s Primary School

A warm welcome to our Foundation Stage where every day is a busy day. We enhance the children’s skills by providing a challenging and stimulating environment and promote independence within their play. We utilise our extensive outdoor provision as free flow learning where the children can explore our natural environment and develop their gross motor skills and coordination.

Our Indoor Learning:

Children are given many opportunities indoors to develop their imagination, creative skills, mark making, fine motor, maths, reading, building, role play and friendships through a variety of activities and areas.

Our Outdoor Area:

Our extensive outdoor area has many activities where the children can be creative, physical, explorers, builders and scientists. We have access to a wonderful wooded area where the children can explore and investigate nature. We have many opportunities for large gross motor development to help with core strength and coordination.

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum which allows us to plan a stimulating, exciting and challenging curriculum through the Prime and Specific areas of learning.

Prime Areas:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Specific Areas:
  • Maths
  • Literacy
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

We record children’s learning in a variety of ways including individual writing books, maths books, topic folders and reading records. We use an online Learning Journey to record observations of the children’s achievements through play. These are shared with parents who are then invited to contribute to their child’s Learning Journey by sending pictures and video’s.
